Artist Statement
As long as I can remember, have been interested in the
aesthetics of random found objects. As a child I began
collecting pieces of wood from my father's woodshop. Later in
life, I began to search for my own form of artistic expression.
I explored color and form through pottery, collage and
theatrical makeup. Eventually, I began working in the
independent film industry in San Francisco as an Art Director.
My experience in independent film offered me the opportunity to
experiment with a variety of materials. Assembling paint,
colored gels, metal and wood helped me create specific moods and
environments as a set designer. During this process, I became
reacquainted with my original inspiration for making art: the
found object. The current work incorporates pieces of canvas and
old wood. Random objects found in city dumpsters, construction
sites, and sometimes, discarded on streets and sidewalks. I
combine these found materials in various ways; some are sewn
together, others, like the cast aside woods, simply becomes my
canvas. I manipulate the oil paint, vegetable pigment, and bees
wax with knives, old socks and underwear. For me the work gives
the found objects a new meaning and context. They serve as a
metaphor for urban and cultural displacement, and for the
importance of social reintegration.
