Jan Dove

In the past few
years, the digital camera has become a means of recording my
observations, and the computer has become a tool for finding
meaning in those observations. I find subject matter wherever I
find myself, usually in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am
interested in the narratives that grow when I collage parts of
my photos together. They tend to express my social and
environmental concerns. The “Holy Water” series is still in
progress. It is a meditation on one of our most precious
resources and our attitudes toward it. The “Duende” series”,
also still in process, is about the fiery creative spirit I find
alive and kicking in my neighborhood. And the “Shattuck Street”
series loosely defined is a play on references to mythological
stories and places.
Technically, I use a Nikon 950 digital camera and I manipulate
the images in Photoshop. While the material comes from my
personal wanderings, my hope is that the viewers can find
meaning for themselves in the relationships my images set up.
