Erik James

Erik James is a
sculptor living and working in San Francisco. He began his
career as an artist at the early age of nine years, building
elaborate sets and ceramic figures. His mother, sensing his
talent, gave him use of the family garage to expand his work in
and strongly encouraged him to pursue his passion. At the age of
fourteen Erik was hired by John Allison Studios, a special
effects group, to work on a PBS mini series called, The Brain.
At this same time he was also attending a high school for the
arts, Moboc, studying theatre as well as painting. At age
eighteen he came to San Francisco to attend the Academy of Art
College. For the next decade he submersed himself in the study
of sculpture, namely ceramics and the human form as well as
intense metal fabrication. From there he went on to work for
Eric Powell, an architectural sculptor and steel furniture
designer. It was here that he was able to fine-tune his metal
fabrication skills. Eriks love for both steel and ceramic has
led him to work on a synthesis of the two materials. For the
past few years he has been teaching himself mechanical
engineering. This has led him to his latest endeavor, studying
sophisticated robotics as an art form. He is currently working
on a number of projects most of which deal with kinetics. Among
these is a life size mechanical performer who will act in an
experimental theatre group known as OmniCircus.
